30 American Slang Words And Phrases 

#1.BAIL ...急いで去る、逃げ出す、ずらかる、ばっくれる
Meaning : leave, abandon or quit something abruptly
Usage : This can be used specifically when someone doesn`t
do something they had promised to do for/with you and they basically
cancel or quit at the last minuite.
at the last minuite...直前に

E.g.1 : It was hard to believe that my coworker resigned(bailed on us) when we only
had one more week left on the project. My boss furious and so were
the rest of my coworkers. He really left us in a bad situation.
furious...激怒=very angry

E.g.2 : Sally was sheduled to go with her friends on their extended
vacation trip to Europe, but she canceled(bailed) at the last minuite.
Eveyone was shocked because they had been planning the trip for ages
(for a very long time).
Now they were all stressed out(extremery stressed) because they were going to
have to find someone else to take her place.

 stress out...ストレス疲れした

 

E.g.3. My friend and I went to a concert last night.But in the middle of the first song she got a text message from her boy friend. When she was about to leave the concert(bail on me) to go see her boy friend.

 

Remember
It is not used in all situations where someone quits. It is mainly used
when a person quitting has a negative effect on the work other are doing.

 

 

#2.FEELING BLUE...落ちこむ;滅入る
Meaning : This slang phrase means to feel depressed, sad, or down.

Usage : This can be used speciffically when someone seems to be sacting a little sad or not as joyful/happy as they usually are.

E.g.1. Last week my friend called to tell me that she would be moving
to the order side of the country. The news took me by suprise,
so I tried to sound happy for her. But, I was really depressed
(feeling blue) for the next few days.

E.g.2. I have been a little sad(feeling blue) lately,but I think it`s
just because of this gloomy weather we`ve been having. It has
been raining cats and dogs for the last couple of days.


E.g.3. The doctor noticed that his patient seemed to be depressed,
so he decided to swich up their conversation. He wanted to help
his patient think about something that was more pleasant.

#3 A BUCK
Meaning : This slang word mean an American dollar.

Usage : This can be used whenever someone is speaking about money.
It bacsically replaces the word dollar.

E.g.: 1. The little boy was in shock whenhe looked at the tag on the jeans.
The tag said that the jeans were 50 dollars(bucks). that was 30 dollars
more than he wanted to pay.

E.g.: 2. he offered me ten thousand dollars(bucks) to do the job,
but i told him no.
My father told me to always beware of get rich schemes.
beware: to be carefull
get rich quich schemes: plans that can not be trusted.

E.g.: 3. I went to the mall with my friends yesterday to do some shopping.
But, when I checked my wallet, I only had 10 dollars(bucks).
So, needless to say, I didn`t buy anything at the mall.
I just did some window shopping.

#4. CREEP
Meaning:This slang word means an unpleasantly weird, strange, or
abnormal person.

Usage:This can be used when speaking about someone you do not like,
or who makes you feel very uncomfortable when they are around you.

E.g.1 :Michelle said that the guy she met at the party last night was
a real jerk(rude person). He kept making comments about her out
fit and her body. she was uncomfortable the whole night.


E.g.2: At the women walked by the men working outside, they started to
whistle and scream at her. She hated when guys made cat calls,
so she decided to say something. She turned around and yelled out,
you guys are rude!(creeps)

yell out:怒鳴る、声を大にして叫ぶ


E.g.3: Her ex boyfriend was a real punk(creep). After they broke up, she
found out that he had been hitting on two other girls in their class.
But, when she approached him about it, he just told her to get over it.

hitting on : flirting with/flirt with イチャイチャする
approached : to ask directly
get over it : stop worrying about it 引きずらない  忘れる

 

#5. Couch Potato
Meanig : This slang phrase refers to a lazy person who rspends the majority
of their time doing things that can be done while sitting on a couch
(usually watching television)

Usage : This can be used when speaking about friends, yourself or other people
in general

 

E.g.1: Mark is a real lazy guy(couch potato) and doesn`t like to participate in
any activity that makes him tired or sweaty. His behavior really ticks
his mother off, but she tries to be patient with him.

E.g.2: Many doctors call people who live a sedentary lifestyle lazy(couch
poato), bacause they useally they useally just lay around watching tv
all day. this is a very dangerous habit according to the research of
many doctors.

sedentary:not moving 座っている、座業の、移動しない


E.g.3: A lot of people become lazy(couch poato) during football season.
On sundays, they just sit in font of the television from morining until
night watching football games all day.
